Latest Updates from Our Project:

More media coverage, and some exciting news on retail distribution

Hello gamers!

We're approaching the tail end of our campaign, and we're delighted by the support you've shown for the book. We're hoping for a final push that will allow us to do a bigger initial print run and take the gaming hobby to a wider audience. We're incredibly grateful to everyone who's backed the project, and to everyone who's helped spread the word by telling their gaming friends and posting about the book on social media.

More media coverage

The We're Not Wizards gaming podcast invited Owen on to the show to discuss games journalism and the ideas behind The Board Game Book. It was a fun, wide-ranging chat and you can listen to it here. If you're looking for some new gaming goodness to add to your podcast collection, why not subscribe?

Exciting news about UK distribution

We've had several game store owners get in touch to ask how they can stock The Board Game Book. We're very pleased to announce that we've arranged distribution through Asmodee UK. They're by far the biggest hobby game suppliers in the UK, and we're delighted to make the book so widely available to retailers. Expect to see it on weekly release sheets shortly after publication.

Obviously, Asmodee UK's parent company is also a significant games publisher. Our relationship with them relates solely to distribution, and they won't have any input on the content of the book. We're completely editorially independent, and we're considering all games for inclusion purely on their individual merits.

Another interesting project

It may cover very different games from the ones we're focusing on, but we were intrigued to hear about GAMEBOOK, a project that combines a collection of traditional board games into a book with thick cardboard "pages." It comes with eight games from different cultures around the world, along with some historical background information for each of them. We really like its minimalist graphic design!

We are fully funded!

We're 100% funded!

We've hit our £15,000 goal exactly half way through our campaign, and we'll be bringing you a gorgeous hardback book celebrating a year of brilliant games!

This is all thanks to our backers, and we can't tell you how much we appreciate your support. Over the coming weeks and months we're going to keep you up to date with progress on the project, and we're looking forward to sharing our work with you as we delve into what's already been an incredible year in the gaming hobby.

Thank you so, so much for your help!

Live chat and Reddit AMA!
almost 6 years ago – Tue, Jun 19, 2018 at 03:47:53 PM

Got any questions for The Board Game Book authors? Fancy a chat about games? We're holding a couple of events we think you'll be interested in!

We'll be doing a Kickstarter Live video chat tomorrow - 20 June - from 7pm UK time (2pm EST). At the time of writing we're approaching 95% of our funding goal, so maybe we'll hit our target while we're on air...

And we'll be taking part in a Reddit AMA (ask-me-anything) thread on Thursday 28 June from 5pm UK time (noon EST). You can join in on the /r/boardgames subreddit, and we're really looking forward to discussing the book, games journalism, our favourite releases of the year so far and whatever else folks feel like asking us about!

75% funded!
almost 6 years ago – Sat, Jun 16, 2018 at 11:18:16 AM

We're more than three quarters of the way to our funding target!

Today we hit the 75% mark on out campaign. We're also approaching another major milestone - 400 backers!

Most Kickstarter campaigns make the bulk of their funding in their first few days and right at the end, with a long plateau in the middle. That hasn't been the case for us. We've been delighted by the way folks have continued to show their support for the project, with new backers finding us every day.

A huge part of this has been down to people spreading the word, telling their friends, blogging about the book and posting about us on social media. We're a small team of devoted game geeks, not a big publishing company, and we can't tell you how much your support has meant in getting to this point. Now we're within sight of our goal, and we're looking forward to producing a book we think you're going to love.

Media roundup

We've been featured on a bunch of great blogs and podcasts. Here's a roundup of the ones we know about. If you've seen the project mentioned elsewhere, please let us know!

  • Dice Tower News ran a post about the project, saying: "With dedicated chapters on family games, party games, strategy games, and more, this book is a valuable resource for all gamers, from experienced players to new entrants into the hobby."
  • Shut Up & Sit Down featured us in their weekly gaming news article. They said: "Not only does [The Board Game Book] have professional writers examining the year’s best releases, it has the nicest accompanying photography I’ve seen in a board game book."
  • Gameosity chose us as one of their Kickstarter picks of the week, with writer Jessica Fisher saying: "Owen Duffy has assembled a cracking team of writers to create a guide to many of the year’s best games. This book looks so slick, and I think it will be a great resource and collector’s item."
  • Naylor Games looked forward to reading our behind-the-scenes designer interviews: "The list of interviewees is already excellent and probably alone worth the RRP."
  • Beasts of War said: "The book itself is looking wonderfully presented and I love the layout. This is without mentioning the stunning photography showing off the different game components and each of the products in full swing."
  • The Giant Brain ran an interview with Owen about the book and the state of tabletop gaming journalism.
  • The Cardboard Herald Podcast also invited Owen on to the show to talk about his background in games, the gaming community and the ideas behind The Board Game Book.
  • The Games Research Network ran a guest post by Owen on how the project could reach new players who don't consume online gaming media.

Wow, that's a lot! If you run a blog, podcast or YouTube channel or know someone who does, we'd be delighted to talk to them about the book!

Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to our next campaign update when we hit 100%!

50% funded! And an update on digital editions
almost 6 years ago – Tue, Jun 12, 2018 at 12:44:35 PM

We're 50% funded!

We're less than a week into our campaign, and a few moments ago we hit 50% of our funding target. To say we're grateful would be an understatement. Knowing that there are people who value what we're doing and are willing to support our work is an incredible feeling. It means a huge amount to us personally and professionally, and we're going to work every day between now and the book's completion to deliver something truly special for the hobby and the gaming community.

Although I'm now really pretty worried that we're going to hit £8,000 by Tuesday and I'm actually going to have to dye my hair purple...

ePub added to digital editions

We've had a number of folks get in touch to ask whether we plan to release the book in ePub format, and the answer is: yes!

We'll be including ePub versions of the book with all physical and digital pledge levels. This comes at no extra cost to backers, and we hope it means you'll enjoy the book on a wider range of devices! While we're unable to edit our backer rewards now that the campaign is underway, all current and future backers will automatically receive the ePub and the PDF versions.
