Happy New Year - and a project update
over 5 years ago – Tue, Jan 01, 2019 at 08:17:06 PM

Hello backers, we hope you've all had a great festive period whatever you happen to celebrate! I just wanted to give folks a little update, because I've had a setback which may have a slight effect on our timings for delivering the book.

Unfortunately my mother-in-law had a fall over the holidays and suffered a head injury. She ended up spending the Christmas period in hospital. Obviously this has left us pretty busy, and as a result I've lost some of the time I had blocked out for photography over the holidays.

If this has any effect on our fulfilment plans, it won't be a drastic one. I'll be working hard to catch up on where I had planned to be, and if there is any delay, it's going to be minimal. But we're looking pretty tight for Airecon now, and it's about 50/50 whether we'll be able to attend.

I know this is disappointing news, but I've had to put family first. I'll be working flat-out over the coming weeks, and we're all still really excited about getting the finished book into your hands. On behalf of the whole team, I'd like to thank you again for your support and with you a happy and peaceful 2019.

We're deleting our Facebook page
over 5 years ago – Thu, Nov 22, 2018 at 10:23:38 PM

Hey folks. Just a brief heads-up to let you know that I'll shortly be deleting my personal Facebook profile, and as a result the Board Game Book page will also be coming down.

There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that it hasn't been the source of engagement I thought it might be. But another is that I feel very uncomfortable with Facebook's policies and recent actions, and without wanting to get deeply into my personal politics, I don't feel that their values and mine mesh very well.

I just wanted to let backers know because I understand that it can be disconcerting if a project suddenly goes dark on social media. Don't panic! We're still hard at work (I've done four designer interviews in the past 24 hours!) and you're still very welcome to contact me with any queries at [email protected].

We are, as always, incredibly grateful for your support!

A brief update, and some other cool stuff I've been doing
over 5 years ago – Sun, Nov 18, 2018 at 11:17:49 PM

Hi everyone,

No dramatic news to share with this update, I'm afraid. We just want to reassure everyone that we're still here and still busily working! I have received almost all of the freelance pieces for the book and have been bouncing them back and forth with Matt, Teri and Richard to hammer out the fine details and get them into the best possible shape. In terms of what remains to be done:

  • I'm arranging to get Matt's board game review copies couriered up to me in Glasgow so that I can photograph them.
  • I'm still in the process of interviewing designers, which was slowed down a little by Essen Spiel and the Lucca Comics & Games Convention but is now picking up again
  • And I have a small handful of games that I still have to play and review, which I'll be doing over the next couple of weeks.

It's been pretty smooth sailing up to this point. The only real setback we've had has been a migraine cluster that wiped me out for the best part of a week. It wasn't much fun, but it shouldn't put us behind on our production schedule.

The one thing I'm making some contingency plans for is that we might not be able to secure interviews for every single designer who has games featured in the book. Many are very busy, a few just don't like doing interviews. If it happens, it'll be a very small percentage of the games in the lineup and we'll fill in the gaps with other material—most probably one or two additional reviews.

In other news, I was over in Germany recently for Essen Spiel, the biggest event in the tabletop industry calendar. If you're interested in my thoughts on the show, I wrote a piece for Ars Technica looking at some of the most interesting games from the event.

I also recorded some vlog episodes, because that's what all the cool kids are doing nowadays. They're just rough recordings made with my action camera, but I hope they give a little taste of what it was like. It was also fantastic to meet a few backers in person. One of the coolest things about this project has been the people it's brought us into contact with, and it was great to put some names to faces.

Thanks as always for your support, and I hope you've all been playing some great games!
